Every year 15 Million babies are born preterm all over the world. Of this figure, 3,519,100 are born in India, 1,172,300 in China and 773,600 are born in Nigeria. Unfortunately, while parents and health workers give their best, their best is not enough. This has made prematurity the leading cause of death amongst newborns globally. Complications arising from preterm birth account for more deaths in children under the age of 5. In 2015, approximately 1 million children died globally from complications of prematurity.
As part of the global efforts to reduce prematurity and neonatal mortality to its barest minimum, the World Prematurity Day has been set aside to raise awareness to the issue of prematurity and find means to end it.
